The Story Behind Cosmic Dog Training

Lafayette's Own Certified Dog Trainer

Cosmic Dog Training started with Koda, a rescue dog whose severe separation anxiety nearly cost him his life. His recovery changed everything. Founder Kathleen Valentine discovered games-based concept training while looking for answers, and never stopped. What started as a solution for Koda became a career, and ongoing education. Games-based training worked for Koda. It has worked for many families since.

Founder, Head Trainer, Behavior Specialist

“Every dog has potential. My job is to help you uncover it through science, play, and connection.”

Kathleen Valentine is a certified Pro Dog Trainer and Behavior Specialist with advanced credentials from Absolute Dogs. Her career took an unexpected turn when her family adopted Koda, a rescue dog with severe separation anxiety who could not be left alone. After other methods failed, she found games-based concept training. The results were immediate, and the positive reinforcement approach made sense to her on every level. Today Koda can be left at home for any length of time and often prefers his crate.

During her five years of study, she traveled to the UK twice to train directly under Lauren Langman and Dr. Tom Mitchell, the founders of Absolute Dogs and Help! My Dog, and continues to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Canine Behaviour through Canine Behaviour College.

Building on that foundation, Kathleen helps families find joy and confidence with their dogs. She trains alongside her husband Phillip and their four dogs, two rescues and two border collies. Working with her own dogs every day keeps her skills sharp and her empathy real.

When she is not teaching classes or private sessions, she is out hiking Colorado trails or diving into the latest dog behavior research.

Training Assistant & Marketing Lead

Phillip has been a dog person his whole life. Growing up around farms and animals of all kinds gave him an intuitive understanding of animal behavior that translates naturally to dogs. Kathleen would say he has a gift for it.

At Cosmic Dog, he manages the marketing and design side of the business and trains the dogs at home daily using the same games-based methods. He is the proud dad of Koda, Leo, Arrow, and Fabulous.

The original. Koda’s transformation from a dog who couldn’t be left alone to a confident, settled companion is the reason Cosmic Dog Training exists. These days, he’s happiest on a hiking trail or snuggling on the couch.

Leo

Leo joined the family as a foster and never left. This sweet, sensitive Shiba-Inu/Shar Pei mix came with early fears and insecurities that deepened Kathleen’s passion for training. He and Koda became an inseparable pair. He’s gentle, silly, and happiest sitting in the sun, taking in the world he used to fear.

Arrow is a high-energy Border Collie who came to Colorado from Kathleen’s trainers in Devon, UK, a Devon Gem. He’s passionate, focused, and toy-obsessed, and is working toward becoming an agility competitor. He is charming, with frisbee as his first love.

Fabi is a relative to some of the dogs at Absolute Dogs in the UK and the family’s first service dog in training. True to his name, he brings enthusiasm to everything he does. Fast-paced adventures are his favorite, and he is our only dog who is affection motivated.

Kathy has been a godsend to me and my pup, Sunny. She has given me practical tools that have set me and Sunny up for success. In just a month’s time, the difference is incredibly noticeable. She is accessible, provides great feedback and has helped me as a dog owner in ways I never thought possible. She is always on time, she gives me homework and leaves great notes I can lean on in between our sessions. She has really helped me think differently about the way I interact with my dog and I’m incredibly grateful for her!

If your dog has a behavior that needs love, support, and training, this is absolutely your gal. We didn't need "basic training" or even reactive leash training. Our dog wasn't exactly reactive, she is anxious and then has a hefty alert bark, with the occasional protective bark over our new baby when a human enters the house. Through Cosmic Dog, we have been able to support our loving girl to live in her calm headspace and be much less attentive/high alert to her surroundings. Thankful to have this training and support. Kathleen speaks dog.

Cosmic Dog Training has been a wonderful experience. Kathleen was not only able to help me better understand my dog's breeds and how they interact while being trained but how to work with my neurodivergence to gain better results on my end as the trainer! Highly recommend

I could not recommend Kathleen enough! We asked for her help setting up our new border collie mix rescue puppy for success after noticing that she was hesitant about the world. Kathleen's tips have been life changing for our dog and for us! So happy that we found Kathleen when we did.

We cannot say enough amazing things about Kathleen at Cosmic Dog Training! Finley has gained so much confidence, and we’ve learned so many valuable skills in the Life Skills class. Kathleen makes every class fun and engaging, and we genuinely look forward to going each week. We are so grateful we found her and already plan to continue with more classes once this session ends. We would recommend her to anyone!

Such a great help and an awesome person! Kathleen walked us through what we were doing and what we should be doing with amazing clarity! She’s helped my brother and I with so many questions for our boys and has no problem explaining it to whoever’s involved. Well loved by pets and parents 👏🏽

Kathleen is in that top tier of professionals who performs their role as a vocation & not just a job. She communicates sometimes complex concepts clearly & with humor & passion. She has a patience & tempo that is easy to want to emulate (I think we’re calling that co-regulating in pop-psychology). The photos are of my 18 month old at an outdoor patio restaurant, snuggling with a 5yo that he just met, using his chaos box to have his dinner (that’s one of the fun activities we learned in one of our classes) & knocked out after a find-it exercise with cinder blocks at home (another enrichment exercise we learned in 1of our classes). You would not regret working with Kathleen & her creative, light-hearted approach to dog trainings. Highly recommend! 🥇

I’ve been working with Kathleen for the last three months with my 7 year old pit lab mix. Connor was a foster/rescue dog with reactivity issues especially with the random runner or even person that would waltz by. It’s been really insightful to learn new techniques and tricks to help boost Connor’s confidence and knock down the hyperness when needed.
