Training Built on Behavioral Science

Kathleen Valentine builds every training session around one question: why is this dog behaving this way? The answer shapes the games, the plan, and the pace. Using positive reinforcement and games-based concept training, Kathleen addresses the root cause of behavior challenges rather than managing the symptoms. Understanding the why points the direction. Positive reinforcement, games-based training gets us there faster.

Every session at Cosmic Dog Training begins with a behavior consultation. Before any training starts, Kathleen assesses what is driving your dog’s behavior. Physical discomfort can be a contributing factor, and that gets looked at, too.

Most training addresses the symptom. A behavior consultation gets to the cause. From there, Kathleen builds a training plan specific to your dog’s triggers, history, and needs. The assessment is ongoing. She continues observing and adjusting throughout the training relationship.

Kathleen holds advanced certifications from Absolute Dogs and is completing a bachelor’s degree in Canine Behaviour through Canine Behaviour College. Behavior consultation is at the core of her professional training and her practice.

Behavior consultations are included in every private training session and every group class. Learn more about how each works:

Games-Based Concept Training

Games-based training works the way athletic coaching does. A good coach does not wait for the big game to teach the plays. Skills are built on the practice field first, so the athlete can rely on them when the pressure is real. Cosmic Dog Training works the same way. Your dog learns the skills before facing the challenge, not during it.

This approach works because of how the brain learns. Training in a context of play and curiosity creates new neural connections significantly faster than repetition-based methods. Short, purposeful games, typically three to five minutes, target specific concepts like focus, confidence, and flexibility. Over time these concepts become habits, and dogs learn to respond well in distracting or stressful situations without constant cues or correction. Because the sessions are brief, training fits easily into daily life and happens consistently.

Training Focused on Connection

Behavior challenges are rarely about disobedience. Fear, frustration, over-arousal, and pain are the most common drivers. Addressing those honestly starts with trust. That is what Cosmic Dog Training builds first.

Cosmic Dog Training uses positive reinforcement throughout. Food, toys, praise, movement, and play all communicate clearly and build confidence. Dogs learn faster, retain more, and generalize skills to new situations more reliably when training feels safe.

When a dog struggles, it is a signal. Good training responds to that signal.

Calmness as a Foundation

Calmness is a skill. Dogs that appear naturally calm have usually developed the emotional balance to recover from excitement, stress, or distraction. That balance can be taught.

At Cosmic Dog Training, calmness is introduced early and reinforced consistently. A dog with a strong calmness foundation learns faster and handles new challenges better. A calm dog is safer and more enjoyable to live with. Calmness underpins everything else on the training plan.

Lasting behavior change comes from building skills in small, deliberate steps. Cosmic Dog Training breaks complex behaviors into achievable pieces and layers that progress gradually.

This approach gives dogs clarity at each stage. It also prevents the frustration that comes from moving too fast. Each session has a purpose, and progress is visible. Skills built this way hold up under real-life pressure because the foundation is solid before the difficulty increases.
